One ordinary year

A shelf of jars from the shop.
Or one spice box.

In my mother's house there was no shelf of creams and capsules. There was a steel spice box, a bottle of coconut oil and a bottle of mustard oil. When I see what people buy today for their hair, their feet and their mornings, I add it up. Here is one ordinary year.

The shop way

Bought for hair, feet and skin, one year

  • Hair serum or a hair growth oil$264
  • Foot cream and a heel balm$168
  • Turmeric and ginger capsules$216
  • Boxes of herbal and detox tea$192
  • A night cream for dry skin$288
A year, about$1,128

My mother's way

The book's way, one year

  • Coconut oil, for hair and skin$72
  • Mustard oil$60
  • Methi, jeera, ajwain, fennel and cloves$84
  • Fresh ginger, lemons and garlic$72
  • Besan and plain yogurt for the ubtan$48
A year, about$336

Difference, with the book: about $790 a year

Typical prices, twelve months. Yours depend on your country and your shop.

But the money is the smallest part. What this book gives you is ten quiet minutes in the morning that you do for yourself, the way our mothers did.

Start with one glass tomorrow morning.

My Morning Glass

Thirty days, one glass a morning, ticked off on paper.

One remedy from each part, to try this week

Part One

Simmer the ginger, do not steep it

Slice an inch of ginger (2.5 cm) thin, simmer it with a lid in 1 1/2 cups (375 ml) of water for 15 minutes, and strain. Warm hands in about 20 minutes. On a blood thinner, ask first.

Part Two

Shampoo on dry oiled hair first

After the Sunday oil, do not wet your hair. Work a teaspoon of shampoo into the oily scalp first, then add the water. The oil comes out with less rubbing.

Part Three

Warm mustard oil on the feet

Warm a tablespoon (15 ml) of mustard oil in a bowl of hot water, never the microwave. Rub it into each foot for 5 minutes, heels first, then old socks. Test it on your wrist first.

Part Four

Getting the yellow off

Turmeric stains after an ubtan? Wipe the yellow with a little oil on a cotton pad, leave it a minute, then wash with besan or your face wash. Most of it comes off at once.

Part Five

Crush the garlic, then wait

Crush two cloves with a pinch of salt and leave them on the board for 10 minutes while you chop the onions. Then into the pan. You will taste the difference in the dal.

Part Six

The salt water gargle

Half a teaspoon (3 g) of salt in a glass of warm water. Gargle, spit, repeat until the glass is empty. A raw throat feels softer straight away. Not for children.

195 remedies like these, in one book.

About Asha

“My mother never measured anything. I measured every spoon, so you can do it the way she did.”

I grew up in Punjab. My mother kept a round steel spice box next to the stove, and a small steel pot of water on the back burner from morning to night. Some days it had methi seeds in it, some days ginger, some days a stick of cinnamon.

On Sunday mornings she warmed coconut oil in a bowl of hot water and oiled our hair. In winter she rubbed mustard oil on our feet before bed and pulled the socks over them. When one of us coughed, there was honey and ginger on a spoon before anybody said the word doctor.

She never wrote any of it down. When I started to write it, I measured every spoon, so it works in any kitchen in any country. I checked every remedy against what doctors and health services say today. Where an old remedy does not mix with a medicine, I say so. Where it does nothing, I say that too.

I wrote it for my family, and for all of you who write to me under my videos. If it makes your mornings a little warmer, I will be glad.

If you do one thing this week, beta, put a glass of water next to the kettle tonight. Drink it tomorrow, before your tea.

Plain answers to fair questions

What do I get? Is it a paper book?

PDF books, not paper ones. You get My Mother’s Spice Box, the large-print edition, 82 Remedy Cards to print, The Spice Box Shopping List and My Morning Glass, the 30-day plan. Read them on a phone, a tablet or a computer, or print a page, a chapter or the whole book. Nothing comes in the mail.

Do I need to be good with computers?

No. After you pay, a page opens with a button for each file, and the same links come to your email. Press one and the book opens. The links do not expire, so you can open that email again next month. If a link gives you trouble, reply to the email and I will sort it out with you.

I take pills for blood pressure, sugar or to thin the blood. Is this book for me?

Yes, and I wrote it with you in mind. Every remedy has a Skip it if box, and at the back of the book every remedy is listed again by medicine: blood thinners, blood pressure, diabetes, thyroid and more. Read that page first, and show your doctor or pharmacist what you want to try. A good doctor wants to know.

Will these remedies cure my problem?

No, and I will never tell you they do. This is kitchen tradition, not medicine. Every remedy carries an honest verdict: it works, helps a little, only tradition, or do not do this. Where something needs a doctor, the page says so.

I watch your videos for free. Why buy the book?

The book keeps all 195 remedies in order, with the exact amounts, the swaps and the Skip it if lines, so you find the one you need without hunting for a video. You also get the large print, the Remedy Cards, the Shopping List and the 30-day plan.

I live in the UK, Canada, Australia or India. Will I find the things?

Yes. Every amount is written in spoons and cups and in grams and millilitres. Where an item is hard to find, the swap is on the same line. The Shopping List gives the name of each item in the USA, the UK, Canada, Australia and India, and where to look for it.

Can I give it to my mother or father?

Yes. Print the large print and the Remedy Cards for them, and tape the cards up where they will see them. Then sit down together with the Skip it if page at the back and their list of medicines.

What if the book is not right for me?

30 days, my word on it. If the book is not right for you, reply to the delivery email within 30 days and I will send back the full $27. You keep the book. Cannot find the email? Look in your spam folder for Asha Sharma, or write to [email protected].

Still deciding?

One cold winter in Punjab, my mother rubbed warm mustard oil on our feet every night, and not one of us went to bed with cold feet.
